Understanding PayTo + ArcPay

What is PayTo? +

PayTo is a real-time payment method built on Australia's New Payments Platform. Customers authorise payments straight from their bank account through their own banking app, with no cards and no manual bank transfers.

What use cases does PayTo support? +

PayTo works for recurring subscriptions, one-off purchases, ecommerce checkout, invoice payments, and accounts payable. Any payment type that traditionally used cards or direct debit can be handled with PayTo, with real-time settlement and bank-grade authorisation.

How is ArcPay different from card payments? +

Card payments route through card schemes and carry interchange and scheme fees, plus chargeback risk. ArcPay uses PayTo, so funds move account-to-account in real time and the payer's bank authorises every payment. That means lower cost and far less fraud.

How fast do I get paid? +

Payments settle in real time over the New Payments Platform, typically within seconds, instead of waiting days for card or BECS batch settlement.

Who is ArcPay for? +

ArcPay is designed for Australian merchants, particularly those processing high volumes who want to cut payment costs and speed up settlement.

How it works operationally

What is a PayTo agreement, and how does my customer authorise it? +

A PayTo agreement defines the payment terms between you and your customer, including amount, frequency, and purpose. ArcPay creates the agreement on your behalf and sends it to your customer's online banking for them to review and authorise. Once authorised, you can initiate payments in line with those terms. Customers can view and manage all their agreements inside their own banking app.

What happens if a customer pauses, cancels, or changes their agreement? +

You'll receive a notification through ArcPay as soon as the status changes. If an agreement is paused or cancelled, you can no longer debit that customer until it's reinstated or a new agreement is authorised. Their underlying contractual obligations to you remain unchanged. The change only affects payment initiation.

What if a customer doesn't have enough funds? +

The payment is declined and no funds move. Unlike a card chargeback, the debit simply doesn't proceed. ArcPay notifies you of the declined payment so you can follow up with your customer directly. Depending on your agreement terms, you may attempt the payment again.

How do disputes and chargebacks work? +

Because PayTo payments only ever initiate against an agreement your customer explicitly authorised in their banking app, there is no equivalent to a card chargeback from an uninstructed debit. If a customer believes a payment was made in error, they contact their bank or ArcPay. Dispute processes are governed by your merchant agreement and NPP scheme rules.

Can I change the terms of an existing agreement? +

Yes. If you need to update the amount, frequency, or other terms, ArcPay sends the amended agreement to your customer's banking app for re-authorisation. You cannot initiate payments under the new terms until they approve the change.

Can I migrate my existing direct debit customers to PayTo? +

Yes, and it's one of the most valuable transitions PayTo enables. With at least 14 days' notice to your customers, existing direct debit arrangements can be migrated to PayTo agreements. Customers don't need to re-authorise from scratch, but they do have the right to opt out during the notice period. ArcPay manages this migration process for you.
